We are delighted to be hosting Aulwynd Bindery in our Barn Space for 2025. Launched in 2024, Aulwynd Bindery exists to keep the ancient techniques of English bookbinding alive and make them available to any book lover.
Run by artisan bookmaker Hugo Stevensen, the bindery makes journals and photo albums available for readymade purchase on their Etsy store, as well as fully bespoke binding projects and antiquarian book repair.
Everything created by Aulwynd Bindery is entirely handmade using historical techniques and materials. Traditional bookbinding has become a heritage craft in the age of mass production bookmaking and Aulwynd Bindery exists to keep these beautiful skills alive.
Named after the Anglo-Saxon word for craft, the bindery has been featured in the East Anglian Daily Times and Hugo himself has been interviewed about his work on BBC Radio Suffolk.
Aulwynd Bindery offers hands-on classes in bookbinding on site in the Barn Space. Options are available for whole day or evening classes, and the chance to work on various types of handmade book.
Classes include:
Photograph album in marbled paper and leather
A5 journal with stitched spine
Half bound A5 journal in bookcloth and marbled paper
Marbled slip case
Marbled boxes
Musician’s journal with Coptic stitched spine
